APRIL12-13, 2002

Deadline is Thursday, March 28

Meeting Overview

The meeting will start with registration and a social hour beginning Friday at 6:00 pm in the main building of Oakland High School. The banquet dinner will begin at 7:00 pm, followed by a presentation by Dr. William Robertson, Associate Professor of Physics at Middle Tennessee State University, at 8:00 pm, in the auditorium. Title for the talk is "Physics and Musical Acoustics, or How I Learned to Love the Didjeridu". Sounds like fun!!

The regular session on Saturday will be held in the auditorium, also in the main building. Registration and a continental breakfast will begin at 7:00 am with opening remarks beginning at 8:00 am. The presentation of papers will begin at 8:15. Lunch break will be at approximately noon. If a large number of paper requests are received, we may reconvene following lunch. Otherwise closing remarks will be prior to lunch.

Concurrent with the TAAPT meeting will be a regional physics student meeting/competition. The student meeting will start Friday evening and end with the closing remarks on Saturday afternoon (the same time as the TAAPT meeting). The students should bring their favorite physics demonstrations to show to others, and may opt to give a 10 to 15 minute presentation on a course project or research project in which they are (or have been) involved. The top three presentations will receive monetary awards during the TAAPT closing remarks. Please have students register for the student meeting online at (look for the link to TAAPT Student Talks). Bring your students with you---here is a great opportunity to get to know them better!

Outstanding High School Teacher Award

Nominations are being solicited for the annual Outstanding High School Physics Teacher Award. Please forward your nominations for this prestigious award to Kathy Daniel by Thursday, March 28. The award will be presented at the Saturday session.

If you are coming from I-24 exit 81 (Church Street), turn east at Wendy's onto Rutherford Blvd (longer but less traffic and stoplights). Follow Rutherford Blvd around for almost 7 miles to Highway 96 (Lascassas Pike), and turn right in front of the Tigermarket. After only 0.6 miles, turn left onto Patriot Drive. There is a sign, but it is not lighted. Follow Patriot Drive to the school. Park in front of the main building.

Coming from I-24 exit 81 (shorter, but more traffic lights, about 5 miles), turn right onto Sanbyrn Drive, which changes into Tennessee Blvd. When you pass MTSU, Tennessee Blvd curves around to the left and Highway 96 (Lascassas Pike) goes straight. Go on Highway 96 until you get to Rutherford Blvd (also Northfield Blvd). Go 0.6 miles from the Tigermarket and turn left onto Patriot Drive as above.

Coming from I-24 exit 78, follow Old Fort Parkway (Highway 96) east into town. The road will change to Memorial Blvd after about 3 miles from the interstate, but you need to keep going for about another 1.5 miles until you get to Northfield Blvd. Turn right at the Speedway gas station, just past Long John Silver's and go for about 2.5 or 3 miles until you get to Lascassas Pike (Highway 96, on the other side of town). Turn left at the Tigermarket, and go 0.6 miles to Patriot Drive. Turn left as above.

Lodging is available at both I-24 exits. Exit 78B (from Nashville) has the newer hotels, some with continental breakfast, in case you wake up late and miss our breakfast. All of the shopping areas are also at this exit. Exit 81 (from Chattanooga) has the older hotels, some with continental breakfast. Oakland High School is 10 to 15 minutes from either location, and there is nothing any closer. Here are a few possibilities:
