Sewanee: The University of the South’s 21st Annual Step Show

A warm welcome from Sewanee’s African American Alliance at The University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee.  We gratefully extend an invitation for you to attend our 21st annual Step Show, which will be held on Saturday, February 21, 2015, at 7:00 PM CST.

You and your organization are invited to join us for a fun, friendly and exciting competition of the Greeks. We will have a $1,000 first place prize and a $500 second place prize for both the first place and second place fraternity and sorority winners.

In our nineteen years of competition, winners have come from colleges including Georgia Tech, University of Tennessee - Chattanooga, Auburn, Vanderbilt, Fisk, Middle Tennessee State University, and the University of Alabama.  If your organization is interested in competing, please complete the registration form online by clicking “Registration” on the left sidebar.

Once we receive your registration deposit, a confirmation packet with directions to the campus, the expected arrival time, and other details about the event will be sent to the return address of your registration deposit.  In addition, the prize money will be sent to this address as well.

Listed below are the rules and regulations for the 2015 Step Show:

1.   Any group that wishes to participate in the step show must register by January 15, 2015.  There is a nonrefundable $50 registration fee.  To ensure your spot in the show this registration fee must be postmarked by January 21, 2015.  All checks are to made payable to The African American Alliance.  Deposits should be sent to:

2.   Each group must have to a minimum of 4 participants.  

3.   In order to handle the music and lighting of the group’s performance, each group must have a designated tech person also.

4.   A script or written description of your team’s routine and music must be sent, via email, to The African American Alliance ( by January 31, 2015.  This is a family event so minimal cursing in music will be tolerated.  Teams’ attire and choreography should be appropriate.  If any edits are required we will notify you promptly.

5.   Each group will be allotted a thirteen-minute set to execute their routine including an entrance and exit.  Two (2) points will be deducted for every minute a team exceeds their time limit.

6.   A specific practice time slot will be allotted to each team and teams that do not attend their designated rehearsal time may be eliminated from the show.

7.   In the event your organization wins first or second place in the fraternity or sorority categories, to complete registration, and to ensure we are able to pay groups in the timely fashion, organizations must complete the necessary forms, and supply the information we will need to pay the winners.

In consideration of the travel distance and cost, we will send each registered team $50 for travel expenses following the competition. We will also provide up to two hotel rooms for each organization participating in the competition and a meal for all competitors before the show begins.

Following the Step Show, a campus-wide party for the participants and their guests will be held at the Ayres Multi-Cultural Center.
